CONTEMPORARY CONNECTIONS

Propaganda
King Lalibela was not a legitimate heir to the throne. Yet, to prove his legitimacy as a ruler he went to great lengths to accomplish something that appeared impossible - building churches out of the rock. According to the video, "the churches were propaganda, a political move to legitimize his rule." What objectives might Lalibela have had in building these churches? Would this be considered propaganda by today's standards? What did he ultimately accomplish? Do modern-day political or religious figures ever claim they have extraordinary visions or make almost unbelievable assertions in order to gain the support of the people? Explain and give examples.
