EPISODE ACTIVITIES - After Viewing
Focus Activity
In the Century of the Axe, filmmakers propose that building and
characterized a period of exploding population growth; that this population boom
necessitated changes throughout much of the globe. The segments presented in this
episode illustrate various approaches to "building" within the context of the
changing landscape of the twelfth cnetury. Examine the photos of the five following
structures:
Create a chart that compares each population's view of nature, its civilization,
and its building style. By examining the architecture of a given time and region,
what can you infer about that civilization's relationship with nature, its priorities,
and its goals? How did each civilization's vision of nature affect how they chose to
"remodel" or not to "remodel" it?
Media Literacy
Why do you think the filmmakers use the axe to symbolize this century?
Using the segments presented in Episode 2: Century of the Axe and the primary resources
they make reference to, make a list of the changing global developments throughout
the crntury. Create a flow chart that illustrates cause and effect relationships
between these developments. Charts should refer to population growth, advances in
technology, cultural changes, trade, food, shelter, religion, environment, etc. Based
on your flow chart, do you think that the axe is an appropriate technological symbol
for this century? Would you have chosen the locations selected for the Episode, or
would you have included different locations? Explain your answer in a critical
review of the Episode.
