US Fish and Wildlife Service Division of Law Enforcement

Mission:

The Service protects fish, wildlife, and plants through a range of law enforcement techniques. These include:

• Surveillance of areas where priority wildlife and fishery resources are concentrated. To protect the dwindling numbers of ducks and geese, the Service routinely creates task forces during the waterfowl season in many states.
  
• Inspection of shipments entering or leaving the United States at designated ports, border ports, and special ports.
  
• Investigation of known and suspected violations.
  
• Distribution of information about Federal wildlife regulations and their enforcement.
  
• Submission of evidence of violations to Regional Solicitors of the Interior Department or U.S. Attorneys for consideration of civil penalties or criminal prosecution.

Objectives:

• To enforce the Lacey Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp Act, Eagle Protection Act, Endangered Species Act, Airborne Hunting Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), National Wildlife Refuge System Administration Act, Antarctic Conservation Act, Archaeological Resources Protection Act, Wild Bird Conservation Act, and the African Elephant Conservation Act.
  
• To uncover major commercial activity involving illegal trade of protected wildlife and wildlife products.
  
• To protect domestic and foreign wildlife species that enter into interstate and international commerce that are protected by treaty or otherwise under Federal jurisdiction, and to issue permits when appropriate.
  
• To enhance legitimate use and enjoyment of migratory birds and other wildlife.
  
• To inform citizens of various Federal laws and regulations relating to the protection of fish, wildlife, and plants.
