Sonya Fidler
Department Chair, Social Studies

Sonya Fidler teaches Social Studies at Millard West High School in Omaha, Nebraska, and has been teaching for 25 years in Millard Public Schools.

Sonya has also taught at the University of Nebraska's Nebraska Scholar's Institute, Stockton University's (New Jersey) Governor's School on the Environment and Brown University's Watson Institute on International Studies teacher's workshop for Choices and Capitol Forum. She has been a member of MEA, NSEA and NEA for 26 years, and is a member of the Nebraska State Council of Social Studies and the National Social Studies Association. Sonya is also a member of the Omaha Committee on Foreign Relations, Nebraskans for Peace, Amnesty International, the Omaha Metro Chapter of the United Nations Association and Phi Delta Kappa.

Sonya has been honored as the Nebraskan finalist for the NASA Teacher In Space program, and was the Nebraskan finalist for the Christa McAulliffe Award. Sonya was awarded a Woodrow Wilson History Grant at Princeton. She was recognized by Red Lobster as the Teacher of the Year 1987-88, and was awarded a trip to Japan and teacher exchange by Close-Up/Japan Forum. In 1995, Sonya was awarded an NEH grant to study Islam at Williams College, and in 1997-98 she was a Bosnia Election Supervisor working with OSCE, NATO and the U.S. State Department. In 1998, Sonya was named Outstanding Social Studies Teacher for the 2nd Congressional District in Nebraska. She was named to the Turner Learning National Faculty in 1999.

Sonya has extensive travel experience, with 16 trips to Europe, including a trip to study Polish Studies at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. She traveled to Kenya with the Smithsonian, and has been to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. She traveled to India on a Fulbright-Hays Grant, and went to Japan and China with NYU.

Sonya received a B.A. from Creighton University and an M.A. from New York University. She is also a Grant Reader for NEH and the Nebraska Excellence in Education, and is the Nebraska Capitol Forum Lead Teacher.
