Kenneth J. Harasty
Teacher/TV Lab Director

Ken Harasty is currently in his 29th year of teaching science at Brownsville Area High School in Brownsville, Pennsylvania.

Ken teaches Earth & Space Science, Astronomy, Marine Technology and General Science 9, and is also the director of the school's television studio and advisor for the "Falconer", the high school newspaper. He also has taught in the Department of Educational Studies at California University of Pennsylvania

Ken served for six years as the Pittsburgh area conference coordinator for the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. Since 1998 he has received fellowships to participate in the U.S. Space Camp for Teachers with the University of Alabama at Huntsville and the REVEL Oceanography Project of the University of Washington, where he participated in a research dive aboard the world famous DSV AlVIN submersible of Titanic fame. In 2000, he was selected for a Woodrow Wilson Foundation fellowship to study tropical ecology and global climate change in the forests of Costa Rica. During the summer of 2001, he studied the education system and culture of Japan as a recipient of Fulbright Memorial Fund fellowship. Ken varied background in science has allowed him to serve as a curriculum writer for the teachers' guides that are an integral part of every CNN Newsroom program.

Ken uses CNN Student News in his classes on Mondays for the Environmental Desk segment and on Thursdays for the Science Desk. The works of his students have been selected by CNN Student Bureau to appear on regular CNN programming and on cnnfyi.com education web site. Other programming from Turner Learning is incorporated into the curriculum when suitable.

In addition to his education activities, Ken is a member of the National Band of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and enjoys hiking, fishing and traveling.

Ken received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from California University of Pennsylvania.
