Lorraine B. Palkert
Retired Teacher/Media Specialist
Lorraine taught grades 7-12 Social Studies
and Language Arts at South St. Paul High School, South St. Paul, Minnesota, and was the Media
Specialist for grades 7-12. In addition, she is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Saint Mary's
University of Minnesota
Lorraine has received numerous awards for teaching, including the Continental Cable in the
Classroom Educator Award (1995 and 1990), Central Division National Teacher of the Year in the
A&E National Teacher Competition (1994), Honorable Mention in the A&E National Teacher Competition
(1992) and National Applied Economics Teacher of the Year for Junior Achievement (1991).
She has written articles that have been published in various industry magazines and journals,
such as "Passing the Torch," Cable in the Classroom Magazine (December, 1999), "Teaching with
Cable," The Journal of Media Literacy (Spring, 1997) and "Cable in the Classroom - 101," Cable
in the Classroom Magazine (March, 1992).
In addition, Lorraine has developed resource materials for a variety of subjects, including
the Turner Learning video, Kissinger and Nixon. She has also developed monthly lesson plans
for educators using C-SPAN.
Lorraine has been using CNN Student News since its inception in 1989, finding daily applications
in Economics, World History, Geography and Language Arts.
Lorraine received her B.A. in Social Sciences, English, Education from the College of St.
Catherine, and an M.A. in Curriculum Instruction and Ph.D. in Future Cultural and Educational
Systems from the University of Minnesota.
