Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and Turner Learning, Inc., in partnership with your local cable company, are pleased to provide you with this Educator's Guide for TCM's series TCM By the Book: Stage to Screen. This guide and the series is intended to help you introduce classic film adaptations of stage plays in your classroom and to illustrate and illuminate the elements of drama and film. Suggested activities and assessments in this guide link each film to objectives outlined in the NCTE standards. This program is not intended to replace the study of drama with films, but rather to provide students with the opportunity to evaluate the same story in two different mediums.

For each classic film, we have included:

• Synopsis: Summary to familiarize students with the plot and characters before viewing the film.
  
  
• Behind the Scenes: Facts about the film's production and actors/actresses.
  
  
• Before & During Viewing Discussion and Activities: Suggestions that help students relate to the film and encourage focused viewing.
