Using the "Teaching Storytelling" Video: Phenix City

Introduction

Shirley Garrett gives some background on storytelling and illustrates to students that we are all storytellers. Notice how Ms. Garrett emphasizes not only the importance of the teller, but also of the listeners. The short, fun exercise she uses, "how I got my scar," engages students and allows them to prove to themselves that they can all tell and listen to stories well. Pay attention to the details students use and to their enjoyment of this activity. Ms. Garrett reinforces the power students have when they tell stories, because they control voice, pace, point of view, characterization, etc.
